The body that owns Australia’s most respected and recognised organic logo has changed its name. Biological Farmers of Australia, or BFA, has changed its name to simply Australian Organic. Australian Organic owns the logo that appears on the majority of certified organic produce in Australia – the Australian Certified Organic ‘Bud’ mark.

     It is not just the Biological Farmers of
     Australia (BFA) that turns 25 this year
     but certified organic agriculture in 
     Australia as we know it. BFA was one
     of the first to advocate for organic, 
     biodynamic and biological farming in

Organics is one of Australia’s top 5 growth industries, becoming mainstream, says Report launching Friday, 26 October 2012. Supermarkets are fast embracing organics, with growth propelled by the average Australian. More than 1 in 20 are regular shoppers of organics and almost 2 in 3 have bought organic in the past year, a Report launched today reveals.

Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at RMIT University Liza Oates says a study from Stanford University in the United States comparing the nutritional value between conventional and organic food is irrelevant for most organic shoppers. The study showed there was no nutritional difference between the two types of food.

The Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA) is releasing guidelines for organic producers and mining companies endorsed by the Queensland Government. Unlike conventional properties, organic certified producers are afforded some protection under a number of Acts. Petroleum and gas activity on an organic or biodynamic property is described as an advanced activity under Acts including the Mineral Resources Act 1989 and the Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2009.
